PHE 10

OVERARCHING VISION

The focus of the PHE curriculum is on well-being:  the connections between physical, intellectual, mental, and social health.  Our goal is to provide opportunities where students can continue their immersion in a healthy and active lifestyle that promotes connections between physical and mental health, positive interpersonal relationships, and interactions with the community.

Students will participate in a variety of activities, games and sports that will influence student’s personal fitness and enjoyment of physical activity and increase student’s chances for being active throughout their lives.

COURSE CONTENT

Student learning will focus on the primary two competencies:  Physical Literacy (fundamental movements skills) and Healthy and Active Living (daily participation and fitness).  They will also learn about Social and Community Health (social responsibility, leadership, healthy eating, components of fitness and training, positive relationships, gender identity, sexual health, etc.), as well as Mental Health (Understanding mental health issues, applying strategies to help alleviate stress and anxiety, eating disorders, etc.)  For more information, please go to the BC Ministry of Education website:  BC PHE Curriculum.

All class activities will be designed with the following key considerations:

  • Safety
  • Participation
  • Enjoyment

FIELD TRIPS AND GUEST INSTRUCTORS

Field trips and guest instructors serve to enhance the learning experiences of our provincial curriculum and to provide students with the chance to learn about different physical activity opportunities within our community.  For PHE 10, the enhancement fee is $50 and may include:

Dance                                                      Yoga                                       Golf Lessons at Riverway

Martial Arts                                                    Swimming                               Ron McLean Park

Jogging/Walking in the neighbourhood

ASSESSMENT

As learning is an individual journey, assessment and evaluation is cumulative.  Students are expected to participate positively in all class activities, to work at improving their skill, knowledge, and fitness levels, and to be considerate of and cooperative with others.

All assessments in PHE 10 will be based on a 4-point proficiency scale.  There will be a percentage grade assigned at the end of the year based on the previous terms assessments.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS:  COME PREPARED!

  • Water bottle – filled and ready for use.
  • Students are expected to participate in clothing that allows them to fully participate in all activities (i.e. they should not restrict any type of movement). Athletic clothing works best.
  • Clothing for activity/weather – we will be outside as much as possible, so please dress for it. This means jackets and track pants for cool or wet weather, and hats, shorts, and sunscreen for warmer weather.
  • Footwear appropriate for the activity/facility.
  • Good attitude – you are not going to like every activity we do, but have an open mind and show effort.

BELONGINGS

Students are responsible for their own belongings.  They can be locked in PE lockers (bring your own lock), their own lockers or brought to the gyms/fields (but they may be left unattended for periods of time, so it is recommended to lock them up).  Leave unneeded valuables at home.  The Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

CODE OF CONDUCT/BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS

We have high expectations for our students, their behaviours, actions, attitudes, and the way they treat others – in all interactions.  We ask that students conduct themselves with respect for their peers, the facilities, equipment, and themselves.  This means using appropriate language (no swearing and no put downs), ensuring there is not food or drink in the gymnasium (except for water) and wearing appropriate clothing and footwear during any activities in the gym.
